A chandler was, originally, a craftsman who made candles. Because ships relied on candles and lamps for lighting at sea until the end of the 1800s, chandlers were a critical trade found at every pre-modern port.
Over time, and as electricity replaced candles, chandlers diversified, stocking a broader variety of marine hardware. That led to the emergence of modern marine chandlery: a single place to buy everything from engine parts to GPSs and safety equipment.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association is the leading certification body for the recreational boating industry in the US. Its certifications cover everything from boats and yachts to boating components and oils.
It has 3 classes of oil certification:
Each one is awarded based on multiple bench tests and 5 severe-condition engine tests.
Mercury’s engine oils are all certified as TC-W3 and FC-W respectively. That means they’re independently validated as being fit to perform in demanding marine environments – which many non-brand oils aren’t.
