Repowering
Every engine reaches a point where maintenance becomes excessive.
When you bring your boat in for a repair, we’ll compare our quote against the cost of repowering.
Often, getting the power, control and technology of a brand-new Mercury makes more sense than sinking money into an engine that keeps breaking down.

Gimbal bearings make it easier for the yoke shaft of your boat’s outdrive to move around. They also lighten the mechanical load your outdrive places on your engine.
The outdrive gimbal bearings on MerCruisers will wear out over time (most have a lifespan of 4 to 5 years). If you hear a rumbling noise from the transom while the engine’s running, it could mean you’re due for a replacement. Stress damage and water ingress can affect other components like the U-joint bellows, so make sure your marine mechanic does a thorough inspection during the replacement.
It’s also worth noting that the older greased bearings have now been phased out; Mercury’s newer bearings (the ones with the yellow dots) are permanently lubricated.
There are many reasons a Mercury engine could stall at low RPMs. The choke might be failing to open, the carburettor float could have problems, the engine vacuum could have a leak … the list goes on.
The simplest way to get your engine accurately diagnosed is to either bring it into our Coomera workshop or book one of our mobile boat mechanics. Call us on (07) 5593 7448 or submit a booking request here.
An engine that starts cleanly when cold but fails to start when warm is probably caused by vapour lock – the fuel being delivered to the engine becomes so hot it vaporises, which means the engine doesn’t get enough liquid to work. That’s most common in older, carburetted engines, but it can happen in fuel-injected Mercury motors too.
The culprit could also be leaking injectors creating an overly rich environment (an unbalanced fuel-to-air ratio in the engine). The best way to diagnose the problem is to book an inspection at our Coomera workshop.
Milky oil is almost always the result of water ingress. We’ll identify the location of the leak using a dye test and replace the appropriate parts.
