If you’re buying from us, one of our qualified mechanics will have already surveyed and pressure tested the motor. You’re also welcome to conduct your own visual inspection and request a water test.

During an inspection, it’s a good idea to check:

  • all fluid levels
  • hull and transom integrity with a percussion test (for non-metal vessels)
  • all surfaces for rust or corrosion, particularly on aluminium vessels
  • the engine’s starting and idling ability
  • the throttle response
  • the electronics and fuel lines
  • the condition of the prop
  • whether all gauges work
  • the condition of any cushions or benches.

Boat loans are a type of personal loan. Most boat loan terms range from one to 7 years, although some lenders might offer shorter maximum terms (around 5 years) for pre-owned vessels.

Keep in mind that loan terms and conditions may vary based on your personal circumstances. The easiest way to check your options is to talk to at least three different lenders or consult a broker.

Before heading out on the water in a used boat, it’s important to ensure your vessel is registered, well-maintained, and equipped with the required safety gear. This typically includes approved lifejackets for all on board, signalling and communication equipment, basic firefighting and first aid supplies, and appropriate anchoring gear. The exact requirements depend on the size of your boat, where you plan to operate, and the conditions you’ll face, but the focus is always on being prepared for emergencies, protecting passengers, and operating responsibly to keep everyone safe.
